Here are some of the reasons why Jacob Bros Construction Inc. was selected as one of BC's Top Employers (2018):
- Jacob Bros Construction supports a number charitable initiatives each year, focusing on programs that support youth, underprivileged children and local non-profits that assist the homeless -- additionally, the company matches employee donations of up to $500 per event
- Jacob Bros Construction's head office employees are encouraged to keep fit with free access to an onsite fitness facility, which features exercise equipment, weights, yoga mats, exercise balls, radio and television
Jacob Bros. Construction builds on its relationships
When you're in the construction business, you know success depends on building a solid foundation. For Jacob Bros. Construction Inc., that foundation is its employees.
The Surrey-based construction company invests in its employees' health, education and career training to create a corporate culture that emphasizes relationship-building, safety-consciousness and going above and beyond to get the job done.
"Working for the brothers' family has an added drive that is contagious," says Mike Barstead, Manager of Safety and Training. "Everyone wants to be on a winning team and that's how it feels!"
Jacob Bros. is a multi-discipline general contractor focusing primarily on heavy civil and commercial building construction projects. A dynamic and growing business, the company added almost 40 new positions last year -- just under a 25 per cent employment jump year-over-year.
All Jacob Bros. employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including employee assistance, health, dental and life insurance plans. In addition, there are loyalty rewards like the five-year service award and a discretionary bonus program.
The company also takes education and training seriously, encouraging ongoing employee development through apprenticeships and paid internships, in-house training programs and tuition reimbursement for courses at outside institutions.
On top of all that, employees are encouraged to keep fit with free access to a state-of-the-art onsite fitness facility that features free weights, cardio equipment and every imaginable accessory as well as TVs and a sound system. Jacob Bros. is proud of its employee-initiated involvement in group events like the Vancouver Sun Run and Tough Mudder.
The benefits and company culture also build loyalty. Employees stay with the company long-term: the longest-serving employee has been at the firm for 30 years.
Todd Jacob, one of the three brothers, says the key to their success has been strong relationships -- especially with their employees.
"We're passionate about our people and our projects," says Jacob. "We consider our employees to be our extended family and we're driven by the principle of sustainability for us and our employees -- providing careers, not jobs. I think if we had a secret formula besides hard work, that's probably it."
Jacob says the company has grown in 10 years from a small business where he and his brothers touched everything to one where empowered employees take responsibility and contribute to the management of the business. Not that they still aren't experienced, hands-on owners.
"We've performed many of the roles that our employees are tasked with, so we relate to them," Jacob says.
